about

This jam is inspired by the poems of the mystics of old who expressed their yearning for the Source through many diverse metaphors. One of my favorites is the story of Layla and Majnoon. Majnoon was so love stricken that he went mad due to the separation from his beloved, Layla. The mystics flipped it and used Layla to refer not to human love but to the Divine. Layla means ‘night’ in Arabic and since the night ‘envelops’ it represents God’s Oneness and the returning of the multitude of forms to God. Whereas the day sheds light and reveals the seemingly infinite multiplicity that is the creation. May we all remember our covenant with our Creator and set out on the path of return to the One. “Oh Layla, lest we forget; Love is the only reason that the lovers exist”
