about

(Girl From Ipanema 2.0): Girl from Ipanema Getz and Gilberto classic revisited. This song is based loosely on the greatest love song ever. My grandma from Portugal hipped me to that joint. “The girl from Ipanema goes walking and when she passes, each one she passes goes ahhh. When she walks she’s like a samba that swings so cool and sways so gentle… that when she passes, each one she passes goes ahhh.” So I flipped it, “Everywhere she goes its like angels walking, all over the town got the people talking, each one on the block when she pass is watching...” It's about falling in love with a wholesome young beauty. What’s more classic and universal than that? But it’s also a conscious counter to the standard of “beauty” and “sexy” that is promoted as desirable for women in the mainstream. Instead of looking for a girl who will “get low” and "shake it like a salt shaker,” I am personally inspired by women who have a spiritual modesty, an active intellect, and a deep connection with the sacred, “dressin’ modest, actin’ honest, bring her family honor/ like Madonna/ not the singer but the prophet Jesus’ momma/ I’m Ramon Benitez when you see me in Havana.”
